By far the worst experience we've ever had from an estate agent! It took over a month and a half to get our deposit back, meaning we very nearly could not pay the rent on our new flat and faced eviction. Typically deposits should be given back in 10 days, but this was not the case here. We were also charged over £300 in cleaning fees despite the fact we left the flat in a much better state than when we found it. They even tried to charge us for lightbulbs that were missing when we got there. They also used the classic strategy of charging us exorbitant cleaning fees and then trying to look reasonable by saying that we could meet them 'halfway' when there should have been no fees in the first place!

The communication in particular was dire. We were constantly ringing and emailing trying to get hold of the office and being ignored. On the other hand, when it was time to get money from us the service suddenly became marvelously efficient!
They also attempted to get us to pay 2 months rent in advance despite the fact that this was not in our original contract. If we had not disputed this and gone into their office I have no doubt they would have been happy to be in breach of contract and take the two months rent from us.
There are good estate agents out there no doubt, but I definitely would avoid this one!

We are very satisfied with the eventual outcome of our long association with JCP. We would like to thank Teresa O'Hara for introducing us to the second property even though when she first did so it was beyond out budget.
The sale and purchase involved a chain of 6, and we particularly commend Helen Dodd's handling of this in the later stages of the process, which involved various hiccups including an intervention into a solicitors' firm further down the chain.

One of the female letting agents at one point wandered into my bedroom with a large group of strangers- without informing us there was a viewing that day, without knocking on the front door, and without knocking on my bedroom door. One of my roommates had a window that wouldn't close, no curtains, and mould growing up the wall. JCP constantly left piles of rubbish from their office at our back entrance. Our shower stopped working and wasn't fixed for two weeks.

There were, however, fairly minor annoyances until it came to the deposit. The house had been in a rubbish state when we came to it- one of the mattresses was covered in dog hair, there was a mysterious substance on the bathroom wall, the carpets were stained, etc.- and by the time we left, having painted several of the rooms (with permission) and kept it clean, the flat was in a far nicer state than when we'd moved in.
Israr tried to charge us 400 pounds for cleaning, despite the photos we had taken proving it was clean when we left. We were shown a receipt from a cleaning company which included carpet cleaning, but when we rang the number of the company the phone seemed to be disconnected and we couldn't find any record of them online. When we spoke to Israr on the phone, he admitted that the carpets had not been cleaned but stated that the cleaning bill was nevertheless 400 pounds.
Fortunately for us, we had extensive evidence of how we'd left the flat and ended up taking the issue to our deposit protection scheme, who sided with us. It was, however, a very stressful experience and, we felt, an attempt to bully students renting for the first time who would not know how to respond.
