I am extremely disappointed with Foxtons' handling of my flat letting as a tenant leaving a property. Over 22 viewings in one week were conducted like an open house with no respect for tenants. Agents often left blinds open and the door unlocked on three separate occasions, despite my repeated reminders via emails and in person, as well as escalating to the manager on multiple occasions.
Viewings were not properly requested but announced last minute, like, "I’m popping in between 4-5pm, please let me know if it will cause any inconvenience." This negligence and lack of respect are unacceptable, causing significant inconvenience and security concerns. I hope Foxtons takes this feedback seriously and improves its service. I will not be recommending this agency to any tenant or landlord. Despite great services in closing down offers, the existing tenants face hell in the process. The trade-off shows an immense lack of skill.

I would strongly advise against going through Foxtons for short lets.
Foxtons’ short let offering claims to check all the boxes – “bring your suitcase and we’ll provide the rest,” “fully furnished to a high standard,” “travel light – all you need to purchase are the consumables,” etc. The agent I worked with to find my flat was also extremely helpful and efficient.
Upon arrival, I was very disappointed to find that the property’s condition and level of furnishing were far from ready for move in. The flat lacked many basic items, appliances and fixtures were broken, the mobile broadband was slow and tapped out after two weeks, and the general condition of the flat was poor and not well maintained. In addition to the issues at move in, several substantive maintenance issues arose during my tenancy and the property manager, Rebecca, was extremely unresponsive and avoidant. Many of the maintenance issues were never resolved, I ended up having to buy the basic items missing from the flat out of pocket, and I never got working internet.
The antics continued during move out. Foxtons included professional cleaning as a required check out task, costing £350. The check-out report included multiple incorrect or misleading claims about damage to the flat and missing items that the landlord used to file unfounded claims for full deduction of my security deposit, which I had to take through a formal dispute process to have returned.
Friends who also had a short let through Foxtons had the same experience, so I know this was not an isolated issue. It’s clear that at least the short let strategy at Foxtons is to misrepresent properties to get tenant locked in, then underdeliver, evade, and claw back as much money as possible at the end. If you rent with Foxtons, please be wary of these tactics before you sign a lease.

We thought we had found a lovely flat. The agent said he would make sure it would be refurbished and all up to scratch for us to move in. Three days before moving in date I checked with owner if everything was ok and she told me it wasn’t ready and the property was never expected to be ready until two weeks later. Cut to a month later and we move into an absolutely filthy property where only half of the agreed works were carried out, there were nails coming out of the floor boards, the fridge was broken, kitchen sink and toilet blocked, the water pressure so low that it takes hours to do the washing up and over an hour to fill up the bath tub 3/4. 3mins for water to get hot. The property is managed through an online portal so if you email the managing agent you just get some robotic reply to do the portal. No one from Foxtons showed us around when we moved in, zero explanation as to how anything worked it why it doesn’t. It just beggars belief. On expressing this publicly on instagram I was subsequently contacted privately by over 25 of my friends all sharing horror stories from renting or buying a Property from Foxtons. No human decency whatsoever. I wrote to the CEO and never got a reply.

Foxtons Letting Team very untransparent and spread misinformation to me about my deposit return.
Called about my deposit on Monday and was told my deposit was ready and will be released by the account team the same day.
No word from them so I called again on Wednesday. They said they have not released it yet. So I spoke to the account leader sand she personally said that it would be released by Friday.
Nothing was transferred by Friday or by Monday.
I call them again on Tuesday and they said it was only released on Friday (lied to once again). She said she could sen me transaction receipt by 12 the same day. She did not send one. So I called again and asked another letting support team member and she was useless (to be expected from this team). I asked her whether I could contact the account team or she could contact them/another staff member could contact them. She said no and that only she could call sometime this afternoon, I asked what time and she said she did not know.
It is now eight days and I have not received my deposit (Foxtons state this process takes 3-5 days). I recommend you consider carefully when using their agency since it is clear they have no care for their tenants.

Once they get the money.. nothing!
When we moved in, the flat was far from being clean and many lights were missing or even broken (including the ones above the small stairs inside the flat, which is very dangerous) despite the fact they told us it would be fixed before the moving date.
When we reported these on day 1 and 2, we did not get any assistance. In fact we only got assistance when we did not have electricity in our flat on month 4. We have been ghosted during our time there while paying the managed services.
We moved out more than a month ago and still did not get any reply regarding nor our deposit despite having chased many times.
We will escalate this and write a formal complaint.

Full disclosure - I did not rent a flat with them because the experience was horrible from the first phone call. I was assigned to * and, after bombarding me with questions for 20 minutes, he then told me that my requests were unreasonable and that I should be realistic about my expectations. Trying to build this fake sense of urgency to get me to rent anything that is available just to make money off me, all during our very first interaction... It just ruined the whole relationship from the start. I went away and found a fantastic flat with another agent within 2 days then. Foxtons just want to close deals, make their bonus and leave.

Unreasonable fees which are the highest of any agency we have come across in London. Then there is the high renewal fee. We had to pay Foxton about 100 pounds per renewal for their zero value add. They take zero responsibility for flat issues, not even able to provide advice when our hearing broke in winter. Basically they only show up to make a sale and collect payment.

If you can avoid dealing with Foxton you should. Yes they tend to have very good properties, and that's why we were their customer for the last three years having leased a great flat listed under Foxton back in 2014. But if you are choosing between two similar flats and one agency is Foxton, go with the other agency because you will most likely get better value for money, service, and less pain.
In practice, Foxton has a mixed reputation at best, but do read the negative reviews carefully and they reveal the pattern of poor value for money and lack of sufficient attention to the customer. At its worst Foxton is exploiting tenants and landlords to squeeze more profit. Here's a personal list as warning to others (with confidence that this merely represents the tip of the iceberg):
- Painful to get security deposit back. We had to deal with exchanging about a dozen emails over multiple weeks since the landlord confirmed we can get our full deposit back. Foxton were very vague about payment account issues and was very unclear on what we had to do to get the deposit back. With our every request for clarification a more cryptic response came back, sometimes just referring us back to the first email supposedly with instructions but which was obviously confusing to trigger our queries in the first place.
- Agents incentives seem to be about making any sale, not the right sale, from our experience. As prospective tenants three years ago and again last month using Foxton it was clear they barely took our preferences other than price range into account. For example we clearly said no garden level but they took us to it anyway. We ended up leading flat listed under another agency and already feel the difference in better service
- Inconsiderate in showing our flat toward the end of our lease. As Foxton started to show our flat to prospective new tenants on the last two months of our remaining lease, it was as if they took over our flat Monday to Saturday from 9-7pm. They would contact us to request showings requiring us to leave the flat and these were very frequent coming from multiple Foxton agents. They always ask for a one hour window for just a five minute showing. Many times these requests come no more than 1 hour in advance and they would not accept our request to decline a showing. One time they just showed up. Worst is that half the time the showings get cancelled last minute and we vacated the flat for nothing. This further supports the observation that Foxton have no consideration for customers (especially if you are not a prospective new customer) and only care about making the sale

My family have been using Foxtons for years and this time I did a MANAGED short let, mind you it is winter in London and it's been quite cold. My heating isn't working and to reset it has been an issue. I informed Foxtons of the heating issue in the night, the next day I was at school, they couldn't come and fix it while my mom and 6 month old BABY were home in the cold. They waited for me to come try it myself and when it wasn't fixed, they said I had to wait till the next day to have someone sent. All they could say was that this is standard procedure and they can't just send an engineer and that's fine but how about sending someone from Foxtons to try what I couldn't do? Even at the discretion of my property manager (Paul Hunter) considering I told him I had a child, he could have been more considerate.

We were very unhappy with Foxtons. 1. We moved in the flat and it was not cleaned at all. Because they had failed to book cleaners. However, at the end of the tenancy we were expected to clean the flat to professional standards or pay �270 for professional clean. 2. Things that had to be repaired in the beginning of 2 year tenancy never got fixed. 3. We had to change name on contract and pay �300 pounds. Money was processed very quickly. However, we never resigned the contract even though we emailed twice asking about it. Our previous flatmate was furious about this. 4. Agency fees are ridiculously expensive. 5. As far as we know, they overcharged our landlord for any sort of work so at the end we had to report directly to her and she was taking care of everything. 6. We changed payment from one card to another. Even though we had put correct payment reference, they ticked our payment as not received. We had to go through a mini heart attack to explain that the money has in fact gone through three days in advance and for them to find it and confirm payment.

After lease ends and they have to refund the initial deposit, instead of contacting you and verifying your bank account details for refund, they ask you to contact them instead.

We will never use Foxton's again and advise everyone we know against using Foxtons. If it is not in the contract it will absolutely not happen - even if the agent tells you it obviously will because it is broken and everyone can see it - and if IS in the contract it still may not get fixed - ours was fixed at the end of the tenancy, a week before moving out EXCLUSIVELY because it affected the appearance of the property for prospective tenants. So if in Lettings Sales the service is not trustworthy but sufferable - they are efficient at finalizing sales and do have a large pool of properties everywhere - in Property Management the service is absolutely horrendous. Forget about the conflict of interest in having the same agency at both Sales and Property Management - they are encouraged to have unsatisfied costumers and breach of contract as that only means their fees are doubled up - but response is not timely at all, nothing gets done and there is not even assurance that the issues are getting transmitted to the landlord. An issue such as boiler broken took almost 3 months to be fixed, all of winter, and needed constant effort and contacts to be addressed at all. David is a diamond in the business. Its not wonder he is the sales manager. Extremely professional, calm and in control, realistic and extremely helpful. He is what you hope a manager will be. He is what the target should be for an estate agency in a premium location like Notting Hill. Check that he is what the target should be for any estate agency.
Ive also dealt with him in terms of valuation for other prospective customers (I recommended him to friends and family) have I have seen how he handles that side of it also. Could not be better. Honest, calm and professional with sound advice.
